Do you want to give your kids some arts and crafts time without having to buy boxes of ribbons and popsicle sticks? Nease High School club, Arts in Motion, is giving kids and tweens a chance to dive into creative activities without having to pay a dime.
Arts in Motion is a school club that functions both during the school year and during the summer. Its goal is to allow Nease students to teach kids, tweens and teens entertaining crafts and give them an opportunity to let their creative spirit go.
Katie Hill, a rising junior in the International Baccalaureate program at Nease High School, started the club last winter and, since then, has been organizing each event with care.
"I wanted to do something afterschool that was both entertaining and [could] help kids in the community," said Hill.
During the school year, Hill said the approximate age range for kids attending included 4-year-olds to 10-year-olds. For the summer events so far, the kids have been older — 11-years-old to 16-years-old, Hill said.
"Seven is the average [number of kids who attend]," said Hill. "Seven is [also] the average of volunteers. Volunteers must be from Nease."
July 17 was the seventh event so far and included teaching kids to tie sailor’s knots as well as weave yarn around popsicle sticks to make a design. The kids had lots of fun with the multicolored yarn and even turned some of the popsicle sticks into yarn ninjas.
Some of the other events included crafts like duct tape wallets, puppets with storytelling and origami. The next Arts in Motion event will be August 21 from 3 to 4 p.m. and will include a painting activity. All events are held at the St. Johns County Ponte Vedra Branch Library.
"[I] think the main reason why I wanted to start the club was [because] I really love arts and crafts and wanted to inspire kids to become creative while having fun," said Hill. "I wanted them to know that older kids think creating arts and crafts is fun, too."
