Chamber, Recorder candidate forum July 23

The Ponte Vedra Beach Chamber of Commerce, in cooperation with the Ponte Vedra Recorder, holds a forum for candidates running for election to the St. Johns County commission.

The Forum takes place 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 23, at The Players Senior Community Center. It begins with a 15-minute candidate introduction followed by a question-and-answer session.

Angela Spears, an anchor/reporter with First Coast News, NBC 12 and ABC 25, is the moderator. Spears, who has been with the station for 10 years, reports for Good Morning Jacksonville and anchors First Coast News at Noon. She grew up in Corpus Christi, Texas, and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a bachelors’ degree in journalism.

The panelists are Grace Hayes, editor of the Ponte Vedra Recorder, St. Johns County Business Ledger and First Coast Register; Beau Halton, editor of the Florida Times Union/Shorelines, and Peter Ellis, editor of the St. Augustine Record.

Candidates currently confirmed include incumbents Cyndi Stevenson, District 1, and Ben Rich, District 2. Stevenson’s challengers in the Aug. 26 primary, Al Abbatiello and Merrill Paul Roland, and Rich’s opponent Mark P. Miner will attend.

Randy Brunson, Ken Bryan and Gary McMahon are running for Jim Bryant’s District 5 seat vacated by Bryant’s decision not to run again. All will attend with the exception of Brunson, who will be out of town and will send a representative.

Also on tap this election season: The St. Johns County Chamber of Commerce hosts Politics in St. Johns County, a series of gatherings giving county residents an opportunity to meet and greet the candidates. The events will be held in each region of the county:

Southwest: Tuesday, July 22, 5 to 7 p.m., American Legion, 308 Main St., Hastings

Northwest: Thursday, July 24, 5 to 7 p.m., Glenmoor Community Center at World Golf Village, 235 Towerview Drive, St. Augustine

St. Augustine & South Beaches: Tuesday, July 29, 5 to 7 p.m., the Elks Club, 1420 A1A, St. Augustine

Ponte Vedra: Thursday, July 31, 5 to 7 p.m., The Players Senior Center, 175 Landrum Lane, Ponte Vedra Beach

It is about time that people see how much Cindy Stevenson is on the pockets of contractors, land developers and real estate. She has only voted 3 times against building in over 40 construction ventures and has neighbors lives terrible. Maybe she should live in construction zones she approves for two years and see how she likes it. She has sold this county to land developers and contractors. Jobless rate is going up, people losing houses and she is letting these builders build more houses. She is way out of touch with the public of this county and I await to see the media like the St Augustine record report her business

The mullet wrapper endorsed Stevenson On August 10,2008,and then went on and stated to "not forget to re-elect her on Nov04".They need more suckers to buy there rag.More development=more readers=more$$$ for the Record.They have endorsed all the PRO-DEVELOPMENT candidates.
