Fourth of July fireworks made a late appearance Wednesday evening at the candidate forum hosted by the Ponte Vedra Chamber of Commerce and the Recorder.

District 3 candidates, incumbent Ben Rich and challenger Mark Miner, threw some harsh words at each other during a relatively calm and collected forum at the Players Senior Center in Ponte Vedra.

“[This] is a young and impetuous man who spins half-truths,” said Rich. “[Voters should] accept nothing less than truth and integrity from any [commission] seat.”

Rich told the room that Miner was uneducated and implied that his youth would work to voters’ disadvantage.

Miner, the youngest candidate in the race, said he was running on a platform of civility and respect and, if elected, would work for the “next generation, not the next election. I think it’s time for my generation to be a part of the solution.”

Other than the slight flare-up, the latest in the series of election forums was calm and orderly, focusing on many topics discussed in previous forums—defining the most important issues in the county, charter government and luring business to the county.

According to District 5 candidate Ken Bryan, the most important issue in the county is “you,” the voter.

His opponent, Randy Brunson, cited attracting clean industry to the area as the most important concern. Miner, Rich and District 1 independent candidate Merrill Paul Roland agreed that public safety and health were the top priorities.

“You are St. Johns County,” said Rich. “You are the state of Florida and you are the United States of America. This is about you.”

Most candidates agreed that, if the charter government referendum does not pass on Aug. 26, it would be the will of the people.

District 1 Commissioner Cyndi Stevenson said she would focus on getting a supermajority vote on the three-story height limit on the coast passed through the Commission.

District 5 hopeful Gary McMahon said that he supports anything that gives the voter a choice. His opponent Ken Bryan, who told the gathering that he was part of the original committee to get charter government approved, said “we’ll try something else, we will listen to the people.”

All the candidates agreed that luring business to St. Johns County will be an important aspect of the role they wish to play as commissioners.

Miner said he didn’t feel that the county was doing well enough with tourism alone and suggested looking into getting more flights to Charlotte and Atlanta from the airport.

“No company is going [to want to] come here unless they can get their executives out,” said Miner.

Roland suggested looking into a visitor’s information radio station in the hopes that it would lure tourists off Interstate 95 and into the city.

District 1 candidate Al Abbatiello, also a member of the original charter group, held fast to the idea that the commission needed to figure out a long-range plan for the county before suggesting specific ideas.

Mr. Miner, Thank you for isting in our decision as to whom to vote for. The "next generation" implies to us gray haired folks, that Mr.Rich is the right person for the County Commission. You can't 'straddle the fence, and keep both ears to the ground' at the same time.

In referrence to the "next generation", that would obviously reffer to the "next" group of people to be voted into office. Although I believe Mr. Miner was reffering to his generation or age group to not stand by and let people continue to do the wrong thing in our county. As for the article, let me get this straight Rich, Sanchez, Manuel, Abbatiello, and Bryan all worked on this charter and are all in favor of it. That sounds like quite a team. Do we want the Three Amigos to turn into the Fearsome Five?

One further thought. Here is a blog from another site i copied for you guys to read. I found it very fitting. Buddy Politics When I drive around the County, I see Ken Bryan signs with Ben Rich signs nailed to the post. I also hear they are walking door-to-door together, handing out literature and asking for votes. I find it odd to see two gentlemen running for office campaigning together. It is almost as if they want us to vote for a package deal. Commissioner Rich has done this on several occasions, campaigning side-by-side with Sanchez and Manuel. In my opinion, we need individualism and independent thinkers in office, not best friends. We need leaders who will vote for what they feel is right and not what the man to his left or right says to do. Buddy politics only leads to corruption. We already have the Three Amigos in office. Are the Fabulous Four or Fantastic Five really in the best interest of the County? It is even more odd to see Rich, the pro-Republican support Bryan, a man who lost as a Democrat and then decided to switch parties in order to better his chances the next time around. I am definitely considering voting against these two men. I want my commissioners to vote for their own beliefs and not for those of their friends.

Do-Over... We should really consider giving Ben Rich a second term as a St. Johns County Commissioner. Sure, he has made several mistakes in the past four years and yes, I have watched him repeatedly say things that I don’t agree with. Yet, I still think his intentions are good and he continues to work hard to try and do the right thing for the people in the end. I would like to ask the residents of St. Johns County to please put your differences and frustrations aside and re-elect Ben Rich as our county commissioner. He deserves a do-over. Afterall, even professional baseball players only have to hit the ball one-third of the time in order to be considered good.

The Fantastic Five is certainly better than what we had.Abbatiello has definite plans that will finally put this county and people ahead of the big money and big boys!Oh by the way he remembers what he does and doesn't blame his mistakes on others and will vote his own beliefs.

To Watchinourbucks. The next generation better get involved in local government. Miner is one of the few in his age group that has gotten involved. I get really tired of you over sensitive white haired folks. You generally deserve the reputation that you have as cry babies.

The problem is that there is commissioners in the pockets of developers. Look at Cindy Stevenson, she ignores the average person of this county and yet keeps voting to let big business into the county and build yet more houses. It is not houses we need but business. The likes of Stevenson are ruining this county and as long as the likes of her are in then this country will get more houses and not jobs . It is time the people got out and voted instead of just complaining about how bad our county. As for Miner, well he wants to bring in flights from those two cities, has he spoken to the residents around there, has he let them know about his plans to bring more planes fly over their houses. The answer is no.
