Three more Commission hopefuls have added their names to the list to replace suspended District 4 commissioner, Tom Manuel.
Sterling Ivey, Gov. Charlie Crist's spokesperson, said Ponte Vedra residents David Mariotti and Mark Middlebrook and St. Johns resident Terry Flesher have submitted applications to the Governor's appointment office. St Augustine residents, Cheryl Robitzsch, and Richard Lewis, Ponte Vedra Beach resident, Bruce Maguire, and Nocatee resident Harlon Westover previously submitted applications.
"Should the Governor decide to appoint someone on a temporary basis to the St. Johns Commission, or should Mr. Manuel resign, these are the individuals who have indicated an interest in serving," said Ivey.
According Ivey, the governor is not actively recruiting for any vacancies at this time.
Manuel was indicted by the grand jury on two charges of allegedly accepting bribes totalling $60,000. He maintained his innocence and took a leave of absence on Oct. 15. Crist suspended from office later that same day.
Ivey said previously the only time Crist would consider filling the empty spot was if Manuel resigned from his position or was permanently removed from the position, creating a vacancy.
As it stands now, with Manuel merely suspended, the seat sits open and Ponte Vedra has no direct representation on the board.
Ivey said if Manuel resigns it would require an appointment to fill the vacancy. He said there was a precedent set in Clay county under a previous governor to temporarily appoint a commissioner, however he said they haven’t reached that point with the District 4 seat yet.
