The St. Johns River Water Management District elected Susan Hughes of Ponte Vedra chairman of its board earlier this week.

Hughes is chief human resources officer for JEA, a Jacksonville-based water, sewer and electric utility, where she has worked for nearly 23 years. She has a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Pittsburgh and a master’s degree in public administration from the University of North Florida. She is a registered professional engineer and also is involved in numerous civic and professional organizations.

Hughes said this week she was looking forward to her new role.

"It’s an interesting time in water policy," said Hughes, who was appointed to a three-year term for an at-large seat on the board in Oct. 2003 and was reappointed in 2006 to a four-year term. She was elected vice chairman of the Board in November 2007.

Board members set policies for the District. They are appointed by the governor and serve without pay.
