Girl Scouts celebrate “World Thinking Day”

Approximately 70 Girl Scouts participated in World Thinking Day at Landrum Middle School Feb. 22 alongside troop leaders, families and friends.

The day of friendship has been internationally recognized by 10 million Girl Guides and Girl Scouts for 91 years. The World Association of Girl Guides (WAGG) and Girl Scouts identified the theme of the 2017 celebration as “Grow.”

“We believe that every girl should have the chance to grow, learn and reach her potential,” WAGG’s site states. “We believe that more girls should be able to be part of the Girl Guide and Girl Scout movement. We want a world where all girls have a safe space to grow, and have many exciting, relevant, accessible and user-led experiences.”

The Landrum Celebration saw troops representing seven countries – including Australia, Canada, Mexico, Japan, China, France and Greece – as the girls performed skits, dances and presentations about their chosen countries. Following the performances, the troops walked through a line of educational displays about each of the countries as they sampled foods like vegemite, lamingtons, dumplings and feta cheese. Scouts then exchanged “Special Whatchamacallits Affectionately Pinned Somewhere” (SWAPS) made by each girl.
