Maximize your storage space to get organized

One of the most frequent comments I hear from homeowners is, “My garage and closets are too small and I can’t fit everything in it.”

Yes, we would all like our garages and closets to be bigger, but the problem isn’t necessarily the space is too small; it’s that the space does not have a system or plan. In a perfect world, we would all have much larger garages and closets that would allow everything to fit. Unfortunately, this is not the case for most homeowners and we must make do with the space available.

The best way to get and stay organized is to have a strategy and utilize cabinets, shelving and organizers to achieve that goal. I have designed thousands of garages and closets over the years, and I have seen practically everything imaginable. As an organizational expert, I look at the space differently than the homeowner. I can already visualize what the space will look like and where all the homeowner’s belongings will go. Whose car goes where? Where will the bikes go? What about the garbage cans or recycling bins? What goes in the cabinets and what will be put on organizers? And where do all the clothes and shoes go?

The problem with keeping a garage or closet organized is there are such a variety of items of all shapes and sizes. If you do not have a system, you are going to be continually frustrated and the space is not going to feel organized. Most homeowners are overwhelmed and do not know where to start, but once the cabinets and organizers are installed everything has its place. Many clients say they should have done this years ago and that it is now so easy to keep it organized. But the greatest satisfaction I hear is how good it makes them “feel.” I guess you could compare this feeling to having a clean car, a desk clear of clutter, your kitchen countertops clean and your bed made up with freshly washed sheets. I think you can get the idea and see the similarities with the power of lack of clutter.

Once you have developed a plan and a system is in place, this is when the garage or closet becomes a truly functional space in the home. If the disorganization and clutter in your home has just become too much, a garage or closet system may be the answer so you can enjoy the benefits of a clutter free lifestyle!
