Nocatee hosts Senior Day

Jacksonville’s Senior Life Network held its first Senior Day in Nocatee at Crosswater Hall Aug. 25, welcoming seniors in the community to receive information and give feedback on their needs.

Local health care professionals and practices specializing in programs and care for seniors were in attendance to provide information on such topics as handsets for the hard of hearing, home care, assisted living facilities, and hearing and eye tests. According to Senior Life Network Manager Laura Wesner, the free event provided an opportunity for seniors to learn about programs and services of help to them by bringing them in direct contact with local businesses.

“These senior day events are really for educational purposes,” she said. “There’s so many changes in technology and there aren’t a lot of places where seniors can learn and ask and talk about the things that are of the most help to them. Here, there’s an upbeat vibe and an openness to discussing those things with them in a friendly environment.”

To organize the event, Senior Life reached out to different practices and facilities that they believed would have helpful information regarding senior health, wellness and living. Among them were Silver Creek, Premier Care MD, Humana, Apex and several other organizations that set up booths replete with brochures and goods for visitors. Food, drinks, complimentary health tests, giveaways and educational presentations rounded out the event’s festivities.

“The people who want to participate, who come to help distribute information about these services are people who are passionate about seniors, their health and wellbeing,” Wesner said. “And they help provide a very necessary service.”
