Two Nease High School students are reported to be in critical condition following a car accident Monday afternoon at the intersection of Ray Road and US 1.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at 4:30 p.m. when a Toyota Corolla carrying two girls, ages 15 and 17, attempted to cross the northbound lanes of US 1 but failed to yield the right of way to a Hyundai Santa Fe traveling north on US 1. The front of the Hyundai struck the left side of the Corolla, causing that car to land in a ditch on the west side of US 1. The Hyundai then spun and landed in the grass median. Debris from the impact of the Corolla and Santa Fe struck the front and windshield of a Jeep Wrangler that was facing south on the center paved median of US 1, waiting to turn onto Ray Road.

The two girls in the Corolla were medflighted to Orange Park Medical Center and UF Health-Jacksonville in critical condition. The driver of the Santa Fe was transported by ground to Baptist South. None of the jeep’s occupants – which included an adult driver and two teens – was injured.
