ABOVE Athletics hosted a Family Fun Day on Saturday, Nov. 17 at its location on Philips Highway in Jacksonville that featured a bounce house, food trucks, a guided tour, clinics and demos, raffles and a sneak peek at Phase II of the sports and recreation facility.

Jay Glatting, a commercial real estate developer who is leading the development and leasing at ABOVE Athletics, said the facility’s sports programs are among the most impressive services offered at the location.

"The businesses that we have here are the best basketball academy, the best gymnastics, the best girls travel softball," he asserted. "People come here and they can go to one location and they can have that top-level experience."

The Family Fun Day offered locals a chance to take the family out for a day of fun, learn more about the opportunities available at ABOVE Athletics and view renderings of Phase II of the project.

Current ABOVE Athletics tenants include First Coast Gymnastics, Above Basketball Academy, 5 Tool Training, MaxFit and BASL Soccer.

“We started two and a half years ago," Glatting explained. "It took a year just to start and then another year to finish."

Furthermore, the developer revealed that the original plan was to simply construct a basketball court, but it never materialized because the project was unaffordable.

"We realized we can't afford to buy a piece of land and do a parking lot for just one basketball court," he said. "So, it kind of grew and grew, and then after Phase II is complete, it ends up being an $8 million project with multiple investors, partners and people along the way."

Phase 1 of ABOVE Athletics, which opened its doors in August 2018, features a total space of 30,000 square feet with facilities and programs for gymnastics, group physical training, soccer, softball and basketball. The groundbreaking of the 26,000-square-foot Phase II of the project will take place in January 2019, with expected completion is May 2019. It will include a building dedicated to health, wellness and recovery.

Confirmed tenants for Phase II include Rainbow Pediatric Center — a pediatric practice that will offer a holistic model of practice at the ABOVE location including pediatric concussion treatment and management through its Healthy Brains Youth Concussion Center — and Blue32Jax — a pre or post-fitness recovery center. Phase II will also include youth sports injury prevention classes, mental and physical health and fitness classes, parenting classes and comprehensive pediatric care.
