Haven Hospice recognizes volunteers

For the second consecutive year, Diane Mahoney was the recipient of the Haven Hospice Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Award for the St. Augustine service area during the recent volunteer appreciation luncheon and awards event at the Haven Hospice St. Augustine Community Room.

Mahoney has been volunteering with Haven for seven years. Prior to joining the organization, she worked for 42 years as a psychiatric nurse.

“I think one of the things that sets Haven apart for volunteers is that you can volunteer in so many different capacities,” Mahoney said. “I have been involved in a lot of volunteer programs at Haven, but this year I hope to broaden my horizons and get more involved.”

One of Mahoney’s primary duties as a volunteer for Haven is to perform “tuck-in calls," which are made every Thursday to patients in their homes to ensure they have all the supplies they will need for the upcoming weekend.

“During these calls, patients and caregivers often share details about their personal lives,” said St. Augustine Volunteer Coordinator Michelle Colee. “Diane gives them an outlet to discuss what they are going through during a difficult time.”

Additional volunteers who were recognized for the St. Augustine area include Teresa Baker – Patient and Caregiver; Veronika Feltner – Attic Resale Store; Bob Mericle – Community Outreach; Karen Gordon – Administrative; Herb Zieglmeier – Veteran’s Recognition; Dennis Alderson – Special Programs/Legacy; and Ed Delgado – Special Programs/Pet Visits.
