Incoming Nease High School junior Preston Frazier wasn’t initially pleased when his mother signed him up for a week-long financial literacy camp without asking him. However, after attending First Florida Credit Union’s second annual Camp CEO at their County Road 210 branch last week, he not only feels the experience was worth it, but also recommended it for his younger siblings.
Frazier said Camp CEO offered good information about student loans he may need, and he learned more about various money terms he wasn’t sure of before — all while meeting some new friends.
First Florida Credit Union Community Relations Specialist Ashleigh Robinson said reactions like Frazier’s are why her organization created the program that provides youth aged 13 to 16 lessons on financial concepts in a fun, interactive format.
“Less than half of states in our country have financial literacy requirements in schools,” said Robinson. “First Florida wants to fill that gap and ensure youth are properly prepared to make informed decisions on everything from credit card offers to student and auto loans.”
First Florida will offer Camp CEO again in early June 2019. The Jacksonville-based credit union provides a wide variety of other free financial workshops throughout the year.
