The Allen D. Nease High School theatre program will present its production of the classic play “I Remember Mama” Oct. 19-22 in the school’s Performing Arts Center. The public is invited to attend this family-friendly play about a Norwegian immigrant family in early 20th-century San Francisco and their pursuit of the American Dream.

Directed by theatre teacher Brad Segal, “I Remember Mama” tells the story of the Hanson family as seen through the eyes of eldest daughter Katrin (to be portrayed by student Alexandra Hudson). Now an adult author, Katrin recalls happy scenes from her childhood, and many of her reminiscences revolve around her hard working and supportive mother, Marta (Katie Logue). The audience follows the Hanson family as they struggle to raise their four children, earn the money to send son Nels (Noah Mastoridis) to school and support Katrin’s dream of becoming a writer. The heartwarming story stresses the importance of valuing family, education and hard work over material possessions.

Nease’s production of “I Remember Mama” debuts 73 years to the day the play premiered on Broadway, produced by the legendary team of Rodgers and Hammerstein and featuring the Broadway debut of Marlon Brando. The play was later turned into a popular movie starring Irene Dunne.

“I Remember Mama” will be presented at 7 p.m. Oct. 19-21, and 2 p.m. Oct. 22. Admission is $5 and tickets are available at the door. Allen D. Nease High School is located at 10550 Ray Road in Ponte Vedra.
