Ponte Vedra High School swim teams rack up records at state meet

The Ponte Vedra Swim Sharks competed for top honors in multiple events at the Class 2A State Swim meet on Nov. 2 in Stuart, wrapping up a record-breaking season.

The boys’ team competed against 41 schools from across the state and placed third overall.  The girl’s team competed against 47 schools and placed ninth overall, an impressive feat for a team of only four qualifiers. The swimmers set new school records and swam personal best times in numerous events. Both teams brought home district titles this year – the seventh consecutive championship for the girls, and the fifth top performance in a row for the boys. The boys also finished as the runner up in the regional meet, and the girls finished third overall.

The boys’ team competed for top honors in championship finals for the following events:

■ 200-yard medley relay (Nicholas Cox, Jesse Hagy, Igor Kazhuro, Max Milicevic): Third place with a PVHS record time of 1:36.68.

■ 400-yard freestyle relay (Jake Mier, Igor Kazhuro, Max Milicevic, Andrew Relihan): Sixth place with a time of 3:14.09 (PVHS record of 3:13.57 in preliminaries).

■ 200-yard freestyle relay (Max Milicevic, Cleburne Wilson, Jesse Hagy, Andrew Relihan): Eighth place with a time of 1:29.70.

The girls’ team competed for top honors in the championship finals for the following events:

■ 200-yard medley relay (Emma Kelly, Riley Hagy, Lilly Lewis, Haley Harris): Sixth place with a time of 1:51.98.

■ 400-yard freestyle relay (Emma Kelly, Riley Hagy, Lilly Lewis, Haley Harris): Sixth place with a time of 3:39.63 (PVHS record of 3:39.20 in preliminaries).

Swimmers competed in championship finals in the following individual events:

■ Jesse Hagy in the 100-yard breaststroke: Fourth place with a time of 1:00.26 (PVHS record of 1:00.05 in preliminaries)

■ Andrew Relihan in the 200-yard free: Fifth place with a time of 1:43.86 (PVHS record of 1:42.97 in preliminaries)

■ Nicholas Cox in the 100-yard backstroke: Seventh place with a time of 54.26 (PVHS record of 53.78 in preliminaries)

Swimmers competed in consolation finals in the following individual events:

■ Haley Harris in the 200-yard freestyle, 10th place (1:54.85); and in the 500-yard free, ninth place (5:07.54). She had a PVHS record on both events at finals.

■ Nicholas Cox in the 200-yard individual medley: 12th place (2:00.37).

■ Emma Kelly in the 50-yard freestyle, 13th place (25:12); and 100-yard backstroke, 11th place (1:00.32). She had a PVHS record in the 50 free at the preliminaries with a time of 24.98, and a PVHS record in the 100 free at the regional meet with a time of 54.93.

■ Igor Kazhuro in the 50-yard freestyle, 15th place (22.30); and 100-yard butterfly, 10th place (52.51). He had a PVHS record of 51.96 in the 100 fly at the preliminaries.

■ Max Milicevic in the 100-yard freestyle: 10th place (48.30).

 ■ Andrew Relihan in the 100-yard freestyle, 13th place (48.69). He had a PVHS record of 47.86 in the preliminaries.

■ Jake Mier in the 500-yard freestyle, 16th place (4:53.21).
