The Ponte Vedra Family YMCA hosted its first-ever Sandcastle Showdown this past weekend at Mickler’s Landing Beach.

Held on Saturday, June 2, the event allowed kids and families the opportunity to have some fun in the sand, while also learning about the Y’s Safety Around Water Initiative. Winners of the showdown were Jason Schott in first place, Ruby Noland in second place and Laura and Kate Bergeron in third place. All proceeds supported Safety Around Water, which consists of a six-week course that teaches fundamental water safety skills to kids. The course costs $60 per child.

The event also included education on sun safety, with a representative from Baptist Healthy Living Center giving out sunglasses and sunscreen. In addition, a representative from the Mickler’s Landing Sea Turtle Patrol attended to discuss sea turtles, and attendees enjoyed a shark tooth contest.
