Stellers Gallery at Ponte Vedra Beach will exhibit the work of nationally-recognized painters Jennifer J.L. Jones and John Schuyler with an opening reception on Friday, April 13. from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. at 240 A1A North in Ponte Vedra Beach. The show will feature a new body of work by each of the two artists.

As a gallery favorite, Jones has been with Stellers since 2004. She is an American artist raised in rural Virginia and on the central east coast of Florida. Jones received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. With an exploration of beauty and energy, Jones’ mixed media paintings are a meditation on the dichotomy of the existence of nature both as corporeal reality and intangible spirituality.

Employing multiple layers of abstraction and combined mediums including a refined glazing technique, Jones creates rich, organic patinas. Jones’ long-established career is highlighted by exhibitions in select national and international galleries, including a 2013 group exhibition in Paris (in association with Besharat Gallery in Barbizon, France and the Taylor Foundation), and numerous solo and group exhibitions across the U.S. Her highly sought paintings can be found in many private and corporate collections worldwide such as the Atlanta Botanical Gardens, Oprah Winfrey/Harpo Studios, Scana Energy and the U.S. Embassy in Lisbon, Portugal. Jones currently resides in Beaufort, South Carolina.

While experimenting with various painting techniques in the late 1990s, Schuyler became absorbed in the texture created by different applications of paint and mixed media to his canvas. As his captivation with texture progressed, the content and form of his paintings became simpler. Color studies replaced traditional forms of content in his pieces, and the balance and contrast of color became the second focal point of his paintings.

Schuyler works in a process of layering, pouring, scraping off, and scratching into the surface of the canvas while leaving traces of earlier information, plus a buildup and overlap of successive stages. The paintings reveal themselves slowly, while exploring each successive layer underneath to examine the relationship between space and depth, presence and absence.

Schuyler’s unconventional approach culminates in paintings and his rough texture alludes to a passionate physicality while its simplicity in form reflects a cool logic, a balance inherent in all his pieces without a predetermined idea of the outcome while the process guides him. Schuyler currently resides in Boca Raton, Florida.
