A quiz bowl team from Ponte Vedra’s Valley Ridge Academy will test its skills on a national stage May 12-14, when the team travels to Dallas to compete in the National Academic Quiz Tournaments’ Middle School National Championship Tournament.

The Valley Ridge Academy team will be captained by Aditya Singh, who will be joined by Yash Singh. The team will be coached by Pankaj Singh.

The national competition will test the team’s knowledge of history, science, literature, fine arts, geography, the social sciences, current events, and other areas of study.

Quiz bowl is a competitive, academic, interscholastic activity for teams of four students. Quiz bowl teams use buzzers to answer questions about science, math, history, literature, mythology, geography, social science, current events, sports and popular culture. The matches feature a blend of individual competition and team collaboration, since no individual player is likely to be an expert in all subject areas. Participation in quiz bowl both reinforces lessons from the classroom and encourages players to develop new intellectual interests.

This will be Valley Ridge Academy’s first time competing in the Middle School National Championship Tournament. Last year’s tournament saw 160 of the top middle school teams from across the United States visit Atlanta. Middlesex Middle School from Darien, Connecticut won the championship on the last question, defeating Longfellow Middle School of Falls Church, Virginia. Jacksonville’s James Weldon Johnson Middle School will also be competing in the 2017 tournament in Dallas.Tournament results will be updated throughout the three days of competition at http://www.naqt.com/stats/tournament-teams.jsp?tournament_id=7399 so everyone can follow along and see how the team does.
