‘13: The Musical’ on stage Nov. 1-3

Apex Theatre Studio will conclude its fall season with the coming-of-age Broadway musical, “13,” with performances running Nov. 1-3 at the Waterworks, 184 San Marco Ave, St. Augustine.

Geek. Poser. Jock. Beauty Queen. Wannabe. These are the labels that can last a lifetime. With an unforgettable rock score from Tony Award-winning composer Jason Robert Brown, “13” is a musical about fitting in — and standing out!

“This is a show our young artists have been wanting to bring to the stage,” said director Isabel Dondero. “It is funny but also speaks to issues of acceptance, which our company of young artists can relate to during the middle school years.”

Evan Goldman is plucked from his fast-paced, preteen New York City life and plopped into a sleepy Indiana town following his parents' divorce. Surrounded by an array of simpleminded middle school students, he needs to establish his place in the popularity pecking order. Can he situate himself on a comfortable link of the food chain ... or will he dangle at the end with the outcasts?

Performances are scheduled for Friday, Nov. 1, through Sunday, Nov. 3. The show is not recommended for audiences younger than 12.

The creative team includes Isabel Dondero (director), Joshua Sewell (musical director) and Tess Sturgeon (choreographer). The show contains some mild adult language and themes. Running time is two hours, which includes a 15-minute intermission.

Tickets are $22. For reservations and information, go to apextheatrejax.com/events.
