To some, tailgating is more than hotdogs and burgers — it’s an art.

For competitors at the annual Kick Off Cook-off event at Angie’s Subs, it’s also a good deed. That’s because proceeds from the event go to the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund Foundation, which helps support children and families coping with childhood cancer.

Cooks take the competition seriously, serving up a variety of tailgate tapas in the parking lot of the restaurant to win the prestigious award of “Best Tailgate in Jacksonville.” Crowds of hungry fans sample each fare and vote for their favorite. Entry fees to vote are $15 a person and include beer, which will be donated by Green Room Brewing. Last year’s winner, and the year before, was Sawgrass Asset Management.

Brett Hastings of the Law Offices of Brett Hastings is a title sponsor of the event and said, “We think the world of the Jay Fund and (the most important) ingredient is the Jay Fund volunteers, who are fantastic.”

The 2019 Kick Off Cook-off event will feature eight teams from 3 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 20.  Attendees will vote on food, ambiance and tailgate game. Angie’s Subs is located at 1436 Beach Blvd. in Jacksonville.
