Bolles students learn about military during field day

It was a full day of relay races, team-building and camouflage when The Bolles Lower School Ponte Vedra Beach Campus had its military-themed field day, hosted by coaches Melissa Stone and Reggie McAfee on Friday, May 6.

Representatives from each branch of the United States armed forces were on hand to cheer on the students as they competed in military-themed games as military music played. They also visited with the students in their classrooms and gave presentations.

A team from K9s For Warriors visited to tell the classes about their mission to provide highly-trained service dogs to veterans suffering from PTSD and other trauma.

The school conducts its field day with a different theme each year. Last year, it was college football. It is the result of a year of planning by Stone.

“Several years back, I did a military appreciation field day, and it was absolutely a wonderful success for the kids,” Stone said. “They really enjoyed it, so I decided that I would like to do it again.”

Stone said she grew up as “an Air Force brat” and wanted the students to gain some exposure to the military and learn how important it is.

Stacey Hendershot, head of the Lower School, said the students have been learning the games in their phys ed classes and learning about the different branches of the military in the classroom.

“We’re so appreciative to Coach Stone for organizing all of it,” Hendershot said. “And our parents are incredible. They’ve been really supportive.”

In addition to all the fun activities, the students and their families raised $55,000, which they donated to K9s For Warriors.
