COA Center at Flagler Health+ Village at Nocatee plans programs

The following programs will be held at COA Center at Flagler Health+ Village at Nocatee at 351 Town Plaza Avenue, Suite 205, Ponte Vedra. Registration is required and space is limited. Unless specified otherwise, register by email to pbrunell@stjohnscoa.com or by calling 904-819-3234. All classes are open to those age 18 and older.

FITNESS CLASSES

Chair Yoga: A gentle form of yoga that can be done sitting. Instructor: Alison Vitta. Tuesdays, starting May 3 for five weeks; Class time 10:30 a.m. Cost is $30. To register, go to coasjc.coursestorm.com/category/coa-center-at-nocatee.

Stretch, Strengthen, Move and Groove: Join Maggie McNeilly as she leads the group in exercise to obtain greater fitness, strength and mobility. This class can be done sitting or standing and can be adapted to all fitness levels. Tuesdays, starting May 3 for five weeks; Class time 12:30 p.m. Cost is $30. Dance Fitness: Dance your way to fun and fitness. No experience necessary. This class has been professionally adapted to all levels by dance instructor and fitness trainer Maggie McNeilly.  Wednesdays, starting May 3 for four weeks; Class time: noon. Cost $30. Tai Chi: Improve mood, increase energy and stamina, improve flexibility, balance and muscle strength with instructor Dennis Sheils. Can be done standing or seated. Mindfulness Meditation and Asana: This relaxing class will be taught by Yeganeh Sheikh. Wednesdays, starting May 4 for four weeks; Class time 5 p.m. Cost is $30. To register, go to coasjc.coursestorm.com/category/coa-center-at-nocatee.

 

BRAIN HEALTH & MEMORY ENHANCEMENT

IMEP: The Integrated Memory Enhancement Program is a structured, research-based program that integrates the mind, body and brain connections to minimize the progression of memory loss or dementia. IMEP employs specific cognitive and physical exercises designed for seniors and utilizes healing modalities that support overall brain and body function. Thursdays; class time 10 a.m.-noon. Free Chronic Pain Management Classes: Offered by AHEC (open to adults 60+)

Do you have chronic pain? Learn to manage your pain with the free Chronic Pain Self-Management Program sponsored by AHEC. Registration is required, space is limited. You should plan to attend all six classes to learn all you need to know about this important subject. Tuesdays, starting May 3 through June 7; Class time 2-4:30 p.m.

Ask the Pharmacist: Join this informative discussion with retired pharmacist and local resident Ray Lowe. He will talk about the role your pharmacist can play in ensuring the safety of your medications.  There will be a question-and-answer general session after the talk. Individual questions can be discussed in private at the end of the event. Wednesday, May 4 at 10 a.m.

Eat This Not That: This lecture will teach you how to substitute healthier options for the foods you enjoy. Presented by Carla Defuria, registered dietitian and health coach at Flagler Health+ Village at Nocatee. Wednesday, May 17 at 10 a.m.

Morphology & ID Native & Invasive Trees: Explore the basics of plant morphology and how to use this information to identify native trees of Northeast Florida. Bring along your identification field guide if you would like to practice. This free class is led by Terra Freeman, urban and commercial horticultural extension agent and Master Gardener coordinator for UF/IFAS Extension St. Johns County. Wednesday, May 11 from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Posture, Core & the Pelvic Floor: This presentation is for women of all ages to learn how to correct and avoid pelvic floor dysfunctions. Donna Roth, PT, DPT will also lead exercises. Wednesday, May 11 from 3 to 4 p.m.

 

Grandparent & Me Story Time: Parents, grandparents and caregivers with children are invited to join storytellers from the Tale Tellers of St. Augustine for an interactive event. Tuesday, May 17 from 4:30 to 5:30.

How to avoid being a victim to predatory lending: Free informative lecture to learn what to look out for from predatory lenders. Don’t pay more than you have to. Presented by attorney Megan Wall, St Johns County Legal Aid. Wednesday, May 25 from 10 to 11 a.m.

FREE CLUBS AND MEETINGS

What are your interests? Please keep reading for new interest groups at the COA Center at Flagler Health+ Village at Nocatee. No instructor will be present at the events. Meetings will be self-guided by the group, except for the Caregiver’s Support Group. TUESDAYS

Let’s Talk About Grief: A place for anyone who has experienced grief of any kind to come and learn about grief and receive empathy and encouragement from others. This group meets the first and third Tuesday of each month from 10 to 11:30. There will be a group facilitator present at each meeting.  Meetings: May 3 and 17.

Caregiver Support Group: All caregivers are welcome. Meets every Tuesday from 1 to 2 p.m. except holidays. There is a trained facilitator present at every meeting to guide the group.

Widows and Widowers: Social group meeting the second and fourth Tuesday of every month from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Meetings: May 10 and 24. 

WEDNESDAYS

Community Crafting: Bring your craft and work on it while making new friends. Get new ideas and socialize with other crafters. This group meets every Wednesday from 9:30 to 11:30 am.

Mah Jongg MeetUp: For experienced players, come and play. No instructor present. Wednesday, May 4, 11 and 25 from 1 to 3 p.m. and Wednesday, May 18, from 3 to 5 p.m.

Parkinson’s Meet, Greet & Learn: A special meeting for people living with Parkinson’s disease and/or their loved ones. A representative from JAX Hope will be present and we will discuss local support and resources along with a group discussion. The May speaker, Melanie Lomaglio, DPT and board certified neurologic physical therapist, from STARS Rehab will explain how exercise can be the first line of defense against PD. Wednesday, May 4 at 3:30 p.m.

Genealogy Group: A genealogy expert will be present to guide you on the third Wednesday of each month, May 18 from 1 to 2:30.

Bingo: Come and play bingo. Great prizes. Wednesday, May 25 from 3 to 4 p.m.
