Two cyclists were injured Saturday, Aug. 8, after being struck by a car while riding along Palm Valley Road.

According to a report from the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office, Caleb Zane Richter, 20, of Ponte Vedra was driving east at about 8:40 a.m. when he lost control of his red Infiniti Q60S. His vehicle sideswiped a second automobile and then struck a third before traveling into a group of cyclists, the report said.

Witnesses told deputies that Richter was driving recklessly and over the posted speed limit prior to the collision.

Richter exhibited multiple signs of impairment and performed poorly on standardized field sobriety tests, the report said. He was arrested on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and four counts of DUI with property damage or injury.

The Sheriff’s Office did not identify the injured cyclists but reported that they were flown to the UF Health trauma center in Jacksonville. At last report, they were listed in stable condition and continue to receive treatment at the hospital for their injuries.
