It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Douglas Allen Werner on October 6th, 2024 (age 71), beloved husband of Diana Lynn Werner, impactful stepfather to Justin and Brittany Bliffen and Rebeka and Carlo Piccioni, doting Grandfather (“OGD”) to Violet Piccioni, Jamie and Emmie Bliffen, brother to Dr. Glenn and Shea Werner and good friend and exceptional teammate to countless others.
Doug was born on April 9, 1953, in Phoenixville, PA where his father owned a bus company of the same last name. His family home was on a golf course, and he developed an interest in, respect for, and proficiency at golf at a young age. He attended the University of Maryland and graduated with a two-year degree in turf grass and golf course management. He worked as a manager for a turf management company as well as a handful of golf courses for several years. Returning to Phoenixville, he involved himself in local politics, serving as an elected councilman and president in the 1980’s and 90’s. He later founded and managed a successful business in promotional sales. He and his wife, Diana Lynn, retired to Ponte Vedra, Florida in 2023 where Doug was able to return to his favorite pastime on the links.
He was tragically diagnosed with stage 4 esophageal cancer seven months prior and despite treatment, it progressed rapidly. After two weeks in the hospital at Baptist South, he was transferred to hospice where he passed four days later with his wife and stepson at his side. Reflecting on the stream of pictures that have been submitted, it is clear that he loved life, golf, the beach, his friends, and his family. Family and friends celebrated Doug’s life at a gathering and memorial service at Beaches Chapel, 1701 Beach Blvd., Jacksonville Beach, 32250, on Sunday, October 13th, 2024, at 10 a.m. EST.
