Stephanie Kinsey, DDS, owner and founder of Palencia Dental, offers top trends and tips for good oral health in 2020. According to Kinsey, Health.gov guidelines for the start of the new decade focus on oral and craniofacial disease, conditions, injuries, preventive services and dental care.

“Whole body wellness includes proper care of the teeth, mouth, and surrounding head, neck and facial structures as central to a person’s overall health and well-being,” Kinsey said. “Tooth decay, gum disease, cleft lip and palate, oral and facial pain, mouth and throat cancer, and dry mouth, plus a poor appearance due to oral neglect can benefit from significant improvements in oral health of Americans. Great wellness improvements can be made with effective procedures and treatment efforts for additional maladies, such as TMJ, TMD, and with implants, veneers and whole mouth restorations.”

According to healthpeople.gov, an increase in awareness about the importance of oral health to overall health and well-being is gaining acceptance and adoption of effective preventive interventions throughout the U.S. The government reports show that good oral health improves a person’s ability to speak, smile, smell, taste, touch, chew, swallow and make facial expressions to show feelings and emotions. However, oral diseases, from cavities to oral cancer, cause significant pain and disability for many Americans.

“We can all benefit from effective self-care, such as brushing with fluoride toothpaste, daily flossing, and professional treatment,” Kinsey said. Causes of poor oral health include cancer, diabetes, tobacco use, excessive alcohol use and poor diet.

“There are many advantages available to individuals of all ages which can eliminate barriers and promote a person’s use of proper dental care,” Kinsey said, including the use of community water fluoridation and dental practice dental sealant programs, which are leading evidence-based interventions to prevent tooth decay.

Kinsey added that with cultural pressures to look and feel great, patients can be supported by a myriad of short and long-term solutions for better dental health and cosmetic improvements, plus aesthetics. “An attractive and pain free mouth and beautiful smile can be obtained for everyone,” she said. “Our dental health, teeth and gums along with facial expressions may often show years of neglect due to poor hygiene or improper attention. For many, some simple treatments and procedures can help to create dental and whole-body health, and an appearance that can be improved.”
