The St. Simons home of PGA Tour player Davis Love III was destroyed by fire on Friday, March 27. Davis and his wife, Robin, escaped without injury.
According to Glynn County (Georgia) Fire Chief R.K. Jordan, the fire started in the garage and spread quickly. It took firefighters more than three hours to battle the blaze.
“The house upon our arrival was fully involved in flames,” Jordan told The Brunswick News. “It is a complete loss.”
Love issued a statement on Twitter later Friday confirming the fire, saying:
“Our family home was destroyed by an early morning fire. We’re very thankful to the first responders who made a valiant effort to save our home, and we’re keeping things in perspective as people across our community and around the world are struggling with the current unprecedented health crises.
“We’ve been proud members of the St. Simons Island/Sea Island community for many years and will continue to be for many more. We appreciate your thoughts and prayers and you respect for our privacy.”
The 10,000-square foot home was built in 1998. It sat on a five-acre lot on a marsh. It’s been for sale since 2013 for nearly $4.5 million.
Love won THE PLAYERS in 1992 and 2003. He won 21 PGA Tour events, including the 1997 PGA Championship. Love, who’s hosted the RSM Classic at the Sea Island Club since 2010, also was the captain of the winning U.S. Ryder Cup team in 2016.
