The Florida Chamber Music Project will play Mozart String Quartet in d minor, k.421 and Mendelssohn String Quartet Opus 44, No. 3 at 3 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 23 at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall. A reception with the musicians will follow the concert.
“This concert gives us the opportunity to explore the similarities and differences in their music and lives. Both Mendelssohn and Mozart were child prodigies and I think their music shows their youthful genius,” Music Director and violinist Susan Pardue said.
Mendelssohn led a privileged life and as a child he had his own orchestra for practice. Mozart was constantly in search of funds.
Mozart dedicated this quartet to Haydn. He completed it in 1783, while his wife was in labor with their first child. She claimed the rising string figures in the second movement mirrored her cries.
Mendelssohn wrote six quartets in his lifetime. Opus 44 is dedicated to Crown Prince Oscar of Sweden.

Florida Chamber Music Project was founded seven years ago. Joining Pardue are violinists Patrice Evans, Anna Genest and Annie Hertler and cellist Laurie Casseday. All are members of the Jacksonville Symphony.
