From heel to toe: Crucial foot care tips for aging adults

Posted

The average person will walk about 115,000 miles throughout their lifetime. It’s no secret that everyday life puts added wear and tear on your body as you age. From walking up the stairs to getting into your car, your feet provide the functionality you need for basic tasks. That’s why I believe it’s essential for seniors to pay special attention to their feet as part of their daily routine.

First and foremost, I recommend inspecting your feet every morning. Seniors should look for cuts, swelling, blisters, sores and any changes to nails or skin because as we age, circulation often decreases, and the skin becomes thinner and less resilient. This makes it easier for small issues to turn into serious infections or ulcers. Regular inspection allows for early detection and timely treatment.

For seniors with diabetes, foot care becomes even more critical. Diabetes can impair blood flow and reduce sensation in the feet, making it harder to detect injuries or infections. It's essential for those with diabetes to inspect their feet daily, as even minor issues can quickly escalate into more serious complications.

As part of that inspection, seniors should regularly moisturize their feet. Dry, cracked skin can increase the risk of infections and other complications. By keeping the skin soft and supple, moisturizer helps protect against these issues and supports overall foot health.

Additionally, wearing the correct shoe size is crucial for preventing injuries. A strong, supportive heel counter is vital for proper foot alignment and stability. Also, the shoe should fit snugly without excessive movement. Lastly, ensure the toe box provides sufficient flexibility to accommodate natural foot movement. For those with conditions such as bunions or hammertoes, a wider toe box should do the trick.

Moreover, consider using custom-molded orthotics. These inserts help align your feet and legs more effectively, enhancing overall stability.

For Florida seniors who have spent many years under the sun, protecting your feet from sun damage is crucial. One important but often overlooked step is applying sunscreen to both the top and bottom of your feet. The skin here is highly susceptible to melanoma and has likely endured years of UV exposure. To reduce your risk, make it a habit to apply sunscreen regularly. Additionally, keep an eye out for any suspicious growths or moles on your feet and legs. If you notice anything unusual, schedule an appointment with a podiatrist promptly.

Regular visits to a podiatrist are essential for maintaining foot health. Our professional care ensures that any potential issues are identified and addressed before they become severe. We are trained to diagnose and treat a wide range of foot and ankle conditions. Don’t underestimate the importance of podiatric care — your feet are the foundation of your health and keeping them in good shape is essential for your well-being.
