Hugs Across the County seeks donations, volunteers

Posted

Hugs Across the County is an all-volunteer nonprofit providing assistance to St. Johns County children-in-need. Back to school means the HUGS Team is working hard to provide clothing, food, school supplies and programs for St. Johns County kids.

Clothing Care Packages

HUGS provides clothing care packages filled with new shoes, new socks and undies, full-size toiletries, and new or nearly new clothing to kids-in-need. The children are anonymously referred by school counselors and community partners. In just one month, HUGS provided clothing care packages to 123 great kids. The nonprofit’s new Clothing Care Package Coordinator is Carrie Scruggs. She is managing one of its longest-standing programs.

Volunteers are needed to help sort the closet, pack bags or deliver packages; donate new undies, new socks or new sneakers; or donate new or nearly new, school-appropriate clothing. There is a special  need for girls and teen girls clothing.

School-Based Food Pantries

HUGS continues to stock school-based food pantries at seven St. Johns County schools.

Food Insecurity is real in St. Johns County, and the team is thankful for donations of kid-friendly, non-perishable food items to help stock important school-based food pantries. Creekside High Swim and Dive, NW St. Johns County United for Progress and Celebration Lutheran Church recently made donations. The Food Program Coordinator is Holly Ross.

Volunteers are needed to help deliver food to school pantries. Current needs include granola bars, individual cereals and peanut butter crackers. Donations are accepted online at www.stjohnshugs.org/give.
