Junior Achievement of North Florida seeks volunteers for Wi$e Money Week

Junior Achievement (JA) of North Florida, along with Family Foundations, is looking for volunteers to join them for Wi$e Money Week May 13-17.

Wise Money Week is a week of activities and events celebrating the importance of good money management and providing financial education designed to help families become wiser about money. During Wi$e Money Week, community members will commit to one day of volunteering at a local elementary school, known as a JA in a Day. In total, 348 classes will be reached, introducing more than 7,000 students in kindergarten through fifth grade to financial literacy and work-readiness skills.

“We provide the training and the volunteer gets to go into the classroom to teach the students using our curriculum kit,” said Steve St. Amand, president of JA of North Florida. “Volunteers don’t need a background in finance to help. We will provide all the resources necessary and some guidance on working with the classroom teacher and communicating effectively with the students. It is a minimal commitment from the volunteer to make a significant impact in a child’s future.”

In Duval County, 11 schools will participate in a JA in a Day during Wi$e Money Week starting May 9 and will continue through May 17. Each class will receive five 45-minute sessions from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. taught by community volunteers. Volunteers will be given training prior to their agreed upon day, which will include tips on classroom management, how to deliver the curriculum and how to communicate with teachers and students. The training session typically last about 45 minutes, and volunteers will also receive the program kit for their class. The kit contains a scripted volunteer guide, student activities and giveaway items to reinforce what is being taught.

Those interested in participating in Wi$e Money Week can contact Teresa Smith at teresa@janfl.org or (904) 398-9944 extension 227. More information about volunteering for JA can be found at https://www.juniorachievement.org/web//ja-norflor/volunteer.

Junior Achievement’s programs are designed for students from kindergarten to 12th grade to teach the principles of financial management and how to become career ready. The programs are taught by corporate and community volunteers who share their real-world experiences with the students to help them see how what they learn in the classroom can be used when they enter the workforce.
