Local library hosts teen craft hour

The Ponte Vedra Beach Branch Library hosted its very first Teen Craft Hour June 19. Kimberley Hayward, the branch’s youth services assistant, came up with a great first craft idea duct tape crafts. Four teens joined Hayward and other branch staff for tunes, snacks, duct tape and, believe it or not, singing.

After the teens “suffered” through Ms. Anne's selection of reggae and Bob Marley, they chose (and sang along to)…Frank Sinatra.

Supplied by the Friends of the Ponte Vedra Beach Branch Library, crafters had every pattern of duct tape imaginable, yummy snacks and special tools for teens to use to precisely cut their duct tape. Not only is the tape incredibly sticky, but in order to successfully make a wallet (the toughest of the duct tape crafts at this event to make), every measurement has to be incredibly precise. With the help of special tools and self-healing cutting mats, the teens outdid themselves and had a lot of fun in the process. Part-time Security Guard, Mr. Dave, was on hand to interact with teens and even made a wallet himself. Staff says teens enjoy hanging with Mr. Dave.

Hayward interacted with all the teens, helped them to create their duct tape wonders, and sought to make every teen feel at ease. The teen crafters stuck around and helped clean up the room (and even tidy the Children's Department)

The next Teen Craft Hour will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 17.
