Local licensed mental health therapist releases book

As a local Jacksonville Beach licensed mental health therapist, Patty Mohler has noticed in this age of technology that people have lost the connection to others, even though we are more connected than ever.

As such, she wrote a book about the subject.

Renew and Restore: How to Communicate, Connect and Celebrate Your Best Self is a personal growth book written to help readers improve their relationships by teaching them how to communicate better.

“It is meant to empower, motivate and inspire others to be their best self,” Mohler said.

The book explores friendships and how to keep them and communication tips to help readers interact with others better with active listening. It also gives advice on how to not give advice, how to not let technology interfere with relationships, how to remove shame from your life, how to explore the gift of gratitude and how to set healthy boundaries to protect yourself.

“We have gotten so good with our thumbs and we are no longer connected to one another,” said Mohler. “We are looking to have a community and not many do. Most of us give and give and give to our children, work, grandchildren and wives and husbands. Clients come in my office and say, ‘I am lost, I have no idea who I am.’”

She said the book is an exploration of how to connect to ourselves again. It offers advice on how to communicate better without making others defensive.

“The book will show readers how to uplift one another, celebrate one another and how to take time for you,” said Mohler. “When is the last time you invested in you?”

She decided to write the book after hearing from so many clients how disappointed they are in their friends.

“Their friends have let them down and were not supportive,” Mohler said.

She also addresses how people can accept each other’s changes and how to have effective conversations with people when you are hurting.

“Patty's book is a must-have for anyone looking to improve their communication skills, relationships and become a better human being on this planet,” said Kathy Lang. “It is chock full of real-world applications, straight-forward explanations and beautifully touching stories of her life. Anyone who picks up this book is a fortunate recipient of Patty's unique ability to boil it all down into heartfelt, useful practices that anyone can benefit from.”

Mohler hired Branded Expert Press to help her edit the book and keep her on task as she formed it.

In addition to her practice, Mohler offers workshops, women’s retreats and couple retreats around the country. She is hosting a Renew and Restore retreat in October in Jekyll Island, Ga.

“You will rediscover what gives purpose to your life,” said Mohler. “Sometimes it helps to get away from the noise and distractions.”

Prior to becoming a therapist, Mohler was a ceramics instructor, English teacher, fitness studio owner and a professional tennis player. She graduated from Colorado State University with a bachelor’s degree in English with a minor in physical education.
