Partnerships enrich library’s Nature Detective Workshops

Posted

The Ponte Vedra Beach Branch Library Nature Detective Workshops for Kids – featuring the pollinator, bats – on Saturday, July 13 at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. were a hit with 47 kids and their families. Author Marta Magellan wrote the Florida bat book, “Amazing, Misunderstood Bats,” which was used as the basis of the workshops. Magellan was on site to sign the books and each child who attended received a copy thanks to the Friends of the Ponte Vedra Beach Branch Library.

The ladies of Las Adelfas Circle of the Garden Club of St. Augustine taught the kids all about why bats matter, how they help with pollination, and what we can do to help. Every child attendee receives gardening goodies thanks to Southern Horticulture and the Garden Club of St. Augustine including a free plant, Nature Detective notebook, handouts and more. There is also a suggested reading list of books available at the library for kids and families to learn even more about bats, gardening, and taking care of the environment.

The library has partnered with the St. Augustine Garden Club and Southern Horticulture for 11 summers. For the last two years, author Magellan, has written a book for these workshops. In fact, this year’s book included contributions from Youth Services Assistant at the Main Library in St. Augustine, Marcia Daniels, a bat expert.
