PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship comes to TPC Sawgrass

This week, TPC Sawgrass — home of THE PLAYERS Championship — also served as the host course of the PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship, an annual championship that features the top student-athletes from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) and Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) across the nation. The event features nearly 180 competitors representing 24 schools and 51 individuals who are competing in the three-day competition on Dye’s Valley Course and THE PLAYERS Stadium Course. Edward Waters College women’s golf team previously participated in this championship, which was formerly known as the National Minority Collegiate Championship.

Prairie View A&M won the men's Division I title, shooting 311-304-306 for a three-round total 921.  Alabama State finished second  (321-301-303—925 and Florida A&M placed third (315-307-316—938.

In the men's Division II event.  Miles came in first with a total score of 947 (317-322-308) to beat second-place Livingstone (315-327-326—968) by 21 strokes. Savannah State finished in third place (317-332-325—974).

In the women's  Team Division, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi shot a three-round total 928 (302-314-312) for a 28 stroke victory. Delaware State finished second (305-335-316—956), and Texas A&M-Kingsville placed third 328-331-325—984).

Individually in the Men's Division, UAB's Khavish Varadan won the men's title, shooting 70-74-70 for a 214 total. Timothius Tamardi, of Appalachian State, finised second with a 221 (74-70-77), and Keiser's Jose Camacho  placed third (79-74-77—230).

In the Women's Individual Division, Phu Khine, of the University of North Carolina-Wilmington, placed first with a 218 total after rounds of 75-67-76. Missouri's Jess Yuen was second  (74-74-76—224) and Jahaanvie Walia, of the University of Louisiana-Monroe finished third (74-73-79—226).

The event took place Monday, May 3 through Wednesday, May 5.
