Pink Up The Pace draws nearly 3,000

Energy was high, the morning breeze was cool and Francis Field in downtown St. Augustine was awash in a sea of pink on Saturday to support breast cancer survivors and to remember those who lost their battles with the disease. An estimated 2,850 people participated in the annual Pink Up The Pace 5K walk and run. Pink Up The Pace supports efforts to help people detect breast cancer early, and also supports people who have been affected by breast cancer.

An emcee guided runners and walkers to a central location on the field for a group photo. Then participants engaged in warmup exercises to lively music with empowering lyrics. In addition to tutus and pink tights, Flagler Health+ provided capes emblazoned the word “survivor” for those who triumphed over cancer some more than once. Groups wore matching shirts in solidarity. Some individuals wore over-the-top outfits to stand out in the crowd. Still others were accompanied by pets in costume or with fur dyed pink.

The Pink Up The Pace organization provides further support by connecting people who have been through a similar diagnosis. Having a support network to share treatment experiences and talk with about what lies ahead can prevent feelings of isolation.

Runners and walkers were cheered on by a small group of young women near the finish line and each finisher received a medal at the end of the race. For information and 2019 race results, visit www.pinkupthepace.com.
