Plenty of scoring, high-flying action to open basketball season

As the holidays approach, that can only mean that the high school basketball season is now in full swing with many teams having played at least a couple of games.

The Ponte Vedra boys are off to a hot start once again to start a season with a record of 2-1 so far, with impressive wins over Matanzas, 77-59, and Riverside, 79-49, with both games at home.

Their lone loss came on the road against the Providence School, 56-47, but they have shown the ability to score on offense so far with junior Maddox Palmer leading all scorers with an average of 16.7 points per game, while senior David Sanchez Barrera has been a facilitator of the offense with an average of five assists an outing.

The Nease boys have battled hard in their first two games but ended up on the losing end on both occasions against Bishop Snyder, 55-45, and Bartram Trail 39-37. The Panthers are in tough stretch where their first four games are all on the road.

Their home opener will be against Paxon on Dec. 3 at 7:30 p.m.

It has been furious starts for both the Nease and Ponte Vedra girls basketball squads as they have had some impressive showing in the first couple of weeks of the season.

The Panthers are 2-1 with a blowout win over Stanton Prep and a hard-fought close 29-23 victory over Glynn Academy of Georgia in the Insider Exposure Thanksgiving Classic in Jacksonville.

Sophomore Sage Pytel and senior McKenna Owens are both averaging double digits scoring with 11 and 10.5 points per game, respectively.

The Sharks joined the Panthers as participants at the Thanksgiving Classic this year and just like the Panthers have a pair of wins to start the season over a pair of Clay County teams in Oakleaf and Fleming Island.

Junior Arden Doherty and freshman Jocelyn Hoffmann have been the leaders behind the Sharks offense so far as both are averaging 15 or more points.
