Ponte Vedra baseball defeated Tavares 12-4 on Monday in the first of three games the Sharks will play in the Spring Break Classic hosted by Providence School of Jacksonville.

The Sharks were outhit by Tavares 10-7 but were beneficiaries of some sloppy fielding and wild pitching as the Sharks improved their record on the season to 5-2.

Brody Maynard pitched four solid innings for the victors, allowing one unearned run to get credit for his first victory of the season. Matt Barnhorst had a pair of hits, including a two-run triple. Tony Roca had two safeties, one of those hits a solo home run to lead the Sharks’ batsmen.

The Sharks will resume action in the Providence tournament Thursday afternoon, when they will play North Florida Christian with the first pitch slated for 4 p.m.
