Students at Ponte Vedra High School (PVHS) are bringing the magic of “Seussical The Musical” to the stage April 11-14.
To be held at the high school’s auditorium, the show celebrates imagination by immersing characters and audience in the world of Dr. Seuss. This homegrown interpretation of the original Broadway play is directed by Jason Nettle, theater instructor at PVHS and Alhambra Theatre & Dining alum.
“In a society of standardized tests and constant stress about grade point averages, it’s important to remember creativity,” Nettle said. “Developing the creative part of our brains is just as important. Students need to keep believing it is alright to fail as well as succeed when they make strong attempts towards the unknown. Our world will continue to need innovators, and Dr. Seuss helps light that journey.”
More than 100 students from the school’s drama department will take part in bringing Dr. Seuss’ world to life. The show is open to the community, and $10 tickets will be available at the door. Proceeds benefit PVHS’ dramatic arts programs, including theater and singing productions that are open to the public throughout the year.
Running April 11-14, showtimes are Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m.; Saturday at 1 p.m.; and Sunday at 2 p.m.
“Seussical The Musical” is based on the children’s stories of Dr. Seuss, with most of its plot based on “Horton Hears a Who!” and weaving in many other stories. A young character named Jojo uses “thinks” to fuel adventures that transport the audience to the Jungle of Nool, Circus McGurkus and Whoville.
The Broadway play was written by Tony Award winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (“Ragtime”) and is one of the most performed shows in the country. According to PVHS, it attracts children and adults with its memorable songs and visually engaging staging and characters.
