Recycling, reusing, refreshing souvenir cups

This year, THE PLAYERS will debut a totally new, aluminum Sawgrass Splash Cup, which you can take home or recycle on the course. It’s a 16 oz. size, good for quenching thirst, and of course, there’s a bit of adult beverage in it. You can purchase the cup with the drink in many locations around the golf course including:

  • Fan Bleacher #8 Green
  • Bar 904
  • Bier Garden
  • Sawgrass Square Bar
  • Palm Valley Village Bar
  • Wine and Dine
  • The Patio
  • The Grove

Having recyclable aluminum cups is just a part of the PGA TOUR’s commitment to environmental issues, according to Brazos Barber, senior manager, Social Responsibility and Inclusion Communications.

“THE PLAYERS and the PGA TOUR have long been committed to sustainability and protecting the environment and this year we are taking our biggest strides yet to reduce our impact,” Barber said about the new beverage cup. “One example of this is transitioning the iconic Sawgrass Splash to an aluminum cup. The cup will still have a unique design that fans may want to keep as a souvenir, but if they choose to discard them on course, the move to aluminum will ensure that we can recycle them locally.”

Assisting in the recycling effort this year will be students from the University of North Florida and Flagler College. The students are volunteering to be part of the tournament’s Green Team, according to a spokesperson for the PGA TOUR. They will enhance the TOUR’s sustainability efforts by helping fans properly dispose of food and beverage containers, pairing sheets and so forth.

If you take your Sawgrass Splash drink cups home, you can make your own Sawgrass Splash, just like the tournament, by using Tito’s Handmade Vodka, orange juice, lemonade and lime juice.

Here’s the recipe:

1½ ounces Tito’s Handmade Vodka

1/4 cups lemonade

1/4 cups orange juice

1/4 ounce lime juice

Shake and pour over ice.

With all that vitamin C, it’s almost healthy!

For many years, THE PLAYERS has provided either recyclable cardboard trash and recycling containers or recyclable plastic trash bags on site. The PGA TOUR has encouraged all its tournaments to be recyclers of items that can be reused or turned into an alternate energy source for decades. This is a continuation of a long-standing effort by the PGA TOUR to be a good environmental citizen as well as a good neighbor.
