A new contender has emerged in the upcoming legislative primary elections as former St. Johns County Sheriff David Shoar recently threw his hat into the ring for the Senate District 7 seat. The departure of term-limited Sen. Travis Hutson, R-St. Augustine, has created an opening eagerly sought after by candidates from various backgrounds and affiliations.

Shoar is a Republican. His decision adds a layer of complexity to the race, which already features notable figures like House Appropriations Chairman Tom Leek, R-Ormond Beach, contending for the same position.

Serving as the St. Johns County sheriff from 2004 to 2020, Shoar brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of service to the table. His recent role as director of investigations at Woolsey Morcom underscores his ongoing dedication to public service and community welfare, according to his campaign.

The Senate District 7 race has captured widespread attention, drawing candidates across party lines. Alongside Shoar and Leek, the field includes Republican Gerry James, Democrat George Anthony Hill II and unaffiliated candidate Michael Levone Gist, reflecting the diverse interests and aspirations of the district spanning St. Johns, Putnam, Flagler and part of Volusia counties.

As candidates gear up for formal qualification in the coming week, anticipation mounts for the primary elections scheduled for Aug. 20.

Aligning himself with former President Donald Trump, Shoar pledges to tackle pressing issues such as illegal immigration, inflation and insurance costs.

“I am stepping up to the plate for the Florida Senate because our state needs unwavering conservative leadership,” Shoar said. “This is a time that demands decisive action, not half-hearted measures.”
