St. Johns County Commission designates May 2019 ‘Older Americans Month’

At its May 7 meeting, the St Johns County Board of County Commissioners issued a proclamation designating May 2019 “Older Americans Month.”

The proclamation urged residents to take time during the month of May to “recognize older adults and people who serve them as essential and valuable members of our community.”

Fifty-six years ago, President John F. Kennedy designated the month of May as “Senior Citizens Month” to recognize older Americans and their contributions to their communities.

This year’s theme, “Connect, Create, Contribute,” encourages older adults to create and connect with their communities, and continue to contribute their time, talents and life experiences to benefit others.

Council on Aging (COA), a nonprofit charitable organization serving seniors in St. Johns County, will celebrate older adults throughout the month of May.

COA will also host the second of two annual centenarian luncheons honoring residents 90 years of age and better on Wednesday, May 22, at THE PLAYERS Community Senior Center in Ponte Vedra Beach. The luncheon is open to residents who live in zip codes 32082 and 32081 only and are 90 years of age and up. Table sponsorships are available for $250 and include table recognition and one seat at the luncheon. For more information, to sponsor a table or to RSVP, contact Carolyn Karger at (904) 209-3687 or ckarger@stjohnscoa.com.
