The 2019 Landrum Middle School Science Fair

 On Friday, November 22, Alice B. Landrum Middle School held its annual science fair. More than 50 Landrum students representing 65 different projects presented their original scientific research spanning a wide range of topic areas. Categories included Chemistry, Behavioral Science, Physics and Life Science. Twenty-five projects were awarded prizes. 

For the Chemistry category, I (Carter Magnano) won first prize for my study entitled “Polyhydroxyalkanonate Biodegradable Plastics: A New Hope or Another Hoax?”, Skylar Liu (7th grade) was awarded second place for his study, “Buffer Capacity of Different Types of Soils” and Emily Glod (8th grade) won third place for her study, “Which SPF Sunscreen Value Works Best?”.

For Behavioral Science, eight grader Graysen Gaskin’s project, “The Influence of Language in Eyewitness Testimony,” won first prize. Valerie Reyes and Hannah Hayakawa (8th graders) won second place with their project “Are People Unconsciously Biased Towards Gender Roles?” and eight graders Sofia McIntosh and Ella Holder won third prize with their study “Word Choices Effect on False Memory: the Correlation Between False Memory and Eyewitness Accuracy” in the Behavioral 1 Category.

For the Behavioral 2 category, Althea Maya Uy (8th grade) won first place with her study, “Judging a Book By Its Cover”.  Second place went to Natalia Engl and Katelyn Burns (8th graders) for their project “Do Shapes Have Sounds?” and third place was received by both Carly Thompson and Nina Lueck (8th graders) for their project “Smell vs. Taste: Which is More Accurate When Determining Fruit?”

Physics winners included Noah Bartfield (8th grade) who won first place for his study “Can An EEG Based Toy “Mindflex” Be Used to Turn A Lightbulb On and Off Using Mind Control?”, Second place was awarded to Zarah Khan for her study entitled “Clean Air? No Problem!?” Third place went to Charlotte Peverley for her study: “Making More Putts: Flagstick In or Out?”

Eighth graders Garett Davidsen and Hunter Calamari won first place in the Physics II Category for their project “Does Height Affect the Distance a Sinker Weight Submerges  into a Non-Newtonian Fluid?”, Wilson Wingate (8th grade) was awarded second place for his study “The Best Type of Flood Barrier For Storms,” and eight graders Nate Wicker and Jimu Li  won third place for their study entitled “The Amount of Electromagnetic Radiation Absorbed by Different Objects”. 

In the Life Science Category, the final category, first place was awarded to Samay Patel (7th grade) for his study entitled “Removing the Seed Coat: Beneficial or Detrimental?” Second place went to Prasiddhi Pawani (8th grade) for her study “Nutrients vs. Electrical Conductance on Plant Growth: A Correlative Analysis,” and third place was awarded to Lila Kirkley (8th Grade) for her project “Dogs: Left or Right Pawed?”

Category winners and other selected high-scoring projects will advance to the Regional Science Fair that will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2020 at The First Coast Technical College in St. Augustine. Winners from this competition could earn the opportunity to compete in the 65th State Science and Engineering Fair of Florida on March 24-26 at the Lakeland Center in Lakeland.
