Apex Theatre Studio to present “It’s A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play”

The Apex Theatre Studio will present the American holiday classic “It’s a Wonderful Life” as a live radio play on Thursday, Dec. 22.

The time-honored tale will come to life as a live 1940s radio broadcast. With the help of an ensemble that brings a few dozen characters to the stage, the story of idealistic George Bailey unfolds as he considers ending his life one fateful Christmas Eve.

“We wanted to offer something which allowed families to gather together once all the shopping and the running around have commenced,” said Ian Mairs, director of Apex Theatre Studio. “The live radio format and 1940s setting will transport the audience back to another time and place. The play’s message has resonated for over 75 years because it is timeless.”

The cast features alumnae from the Apex Theatre Studio’s Summer Musical Theater program, who are currently enrolled in theater programs around the country, including those at Florida State University, the University of Florida and New York University. Part of the proceeds will go toward Apex Theatre Studio’s “Raise the Mic” campaign to purchase a wireless sound system for the company.

Tickets for “It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play” are $25 and are available for purchase at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall and St. Augustine Amphitheatre Box Offices, ticketmaster.com, all Ticketmaster outlets and by phone at (800) 745-3000. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the performance begins at 8 p.m. The show’s runtime is 80 minutes without intermission.
