COA’s THE PLAYERS Community Senior Center presents its August schedule

The following programs will be held at COA’s THE PLAYERS Community Senior Center, 175 Landrum Lane, Ponte Vedra Beach, beginning in August. Most classes are four weeks long and begin Aug. 1. Lunch — Tuesdays: Four weeks starting Tuesday, Aug. 6, from noon to 1 p.m. Registration required in advance and fee required — $5 per meal.

Lunch — Thursdays: five weeks starting Thursday, Aug. 8, from noon to 1 p.m. Registration required in advance and fee required — $5 per meal.

Duplicate Bridge: Five weeks starting Friday, Aug. 2, from noon to 3 p.m. Fee required — $2 per person, per Friday.

Line Dancing Class: Instructor Will Oglesby teaches you many different line dances with a good selection of music. Open to all adults and experience levels. Four weeks starting Wednesday, Aug. 7, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Fee required — $37.50 per month or $9 per class.

Acrylic Painting: Four weeks starting Wednesday, Aug. 7, from 9 a.m. to noon. Instructor on summer hiatus until Sept. 11.

Caregiver Support Group: Free program. 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7. The group is open to all adult caregivers; meets once a month, on the first Wednesday of each month. Register with the Alzheimer’s Association at 800-272-3900.

Chair Exercise — Tuesdays: Four weeks starting Tuesday, Aug. 6, from 9:30 to 10 a.m.

Chair Exercise — Thursdays: Five weeks starting Thursday, Aug. 8, from 9:30 to 10 a.m.

Tai Chi: Five weeks starting Thursday, Aug. 8, from 10 to 11 a.m.

Canasta — Tuesdays: Four weeks starting Tuesday, Aug. 6, from 10 a.m. to noon

Canasta — Thursdays: Five weeks starting Thursday, Aug. 8, from 10 a.m. to noon

Mah Jongg — Fridays: Five weeks starting Friday, Aug. 2, from 10 a.m. to noon. There are two game sets/mats and two 2024 cards that may be checked out at the front desk.

Mexican Train Dominoes: Four weeks starting Tuesday, Aug. 6, from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Ask a Nurse: Four weeks starting Tuesday, Aug. 6, from 11 to 11:30 a.m.

Bingo — Tuesdays: Four weeks starting Tuesday, Aug. 6, from 1 to 2 p.m.

Bingo — Thursdays: Five weeks starting Thursday, Aug. 8, from 1 to 2 p.m.

Social Bridge: Four weeks starting Wednesday, Aug. 7, from 9:30 a.m. to noon

Board Game Playing: Rummikub, Scrabble and more! Four weeks starting Wednesday, Aug. 7, from 10 a.m. to noon

Wii Bowling: Five weeks starting Thursday, Aug. 8, from 10 to 11 a.m.

Technical Help for phones and computers: Available Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to noon

Home Instead: Amy McWilliams talks strategies and services to help you age in place – in your own home! 11 a.m. to noon Thursday, Aug. 1.

Back to School Haircuts: Nelson Correa of Humana/CarePlus visits with his barber to offer free haircuts! A little off the top and sides please! 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Aug. 6.

National Happiness Day: It’s National Happiness Day! Who knew? If you’re happy and you know it or you need some happiness in your life, this is the event for you! Join Victoria Proctor of Camellia at Deerwood, THE PLAYERS Community Senior Center staff and volunteers as they demonstrate ways to bring happiness into your life. Light refreshments provided. 11 a.m. to noon Thursday, Aug. 8.

Senior Olympics: We have Olympic fever and the prescription is, more Olympics! Did you know … The familiar iconic theme music is actually two pieces together: The first 45 seconds are “Bugler's Dream” by Leo Arnaud, immediately followed by “Olympic Fanfare and Theme” by John Williams. Well, it won’t be a trivia category, but there will be sporting competitions! Earn a gold, silver or bronze medal in cornhole, darts, Wii bowling, target shooting or golf putting. Check Your Blood Pressure with Diane DeCarlo: Thursday, Aug. 15, from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Free

St. John’s County Fire & Rescue: Hear a special annual lecture by Jenn Hampton, operations project specialist and fire and life safety educator for St. John’s County Fire and Rescue. It’s always a good idea to refresh your knowledge of life-saving basics of fire prevention. 10-11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 15.

Community Hospice Presentation: Charlene Beymer and Doug Schilling give advice on advanced care planning. Advanced care planning ensures your family, friends, clergy, other advisers, physicians and other health care professionals honor your wishes should you develop serious or a life-limiting illness. 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Aug. 20.

Happy Birthday August Babies! Enjoy cake, ice cream and the music of “Hot” Rod Mattew as everyone celebrates August birthdays. 11 a.m. to noon Thursday, Aug. 22.

Feeding Northeast Florida: A series of free nutrition classes and cooking demonstrations from Feeding Northeast Florida. Topics covered: My Plate, Basic Cooking Skills, Food Safety, Shopping on a Budget, Meal Planning and Physical Activity. 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Aug. 27.

St. John’s County Legal Aid: Megan Wall, St. John’s County Legal Aid managing attorney, answers these questions: Is probate a dirty word? What is it? This is a free lecture. 11 a.m. to noon Thursday, Aug. 29.
