Beaches Rotary clubs, community groups join forces for inaugural ‘Beaches Health Jam’

On Saturday, Aug. 6, area health and healthy lifestyle organizations will come together at the Carver Center for the inaugural “Beaches Health Jam.”

In recognition of the 100th year of the Rotary Foundation, the Jacksonville Oceanside, Ponte Vedra Beach Sunset and Ponte Vedra Beach Rotary clubs are joining forces to host the free community event in Jacksonville Beach.

One of the main goals of the event, organizers say, is to bring the St. Vincent’s Mobile Health Unit to the beach.

“Rotary Clubs across our area worked hard to fund the unit and we wanted to make it available to our community” said Jeff Michelman, president of the Jacksonville Oceanside Rotary Club. “From this goal, the idea for a larger community health event was born.”

Beginning at 3 p.m., guests will be able to have free health screenings; sample healthy recipes; participate in line dancing, Pilates and Tai Chi demonstrations; and play games, among other health-based activities. The afternoon will be capped off by the beaches biggest “Wobble” dance event at 5:30 p.m.

At 6 p.m., the Battle for the Beach kickball tournament will begin, with members from the participating Rotary clubs and officials from each beach city competing for a traveling trophy. There will also be a match between the Carver Center and the Donner Center, with the mayors of Atlantic Beach and Jacksonville Beach participating.

“We are so thrilled with the great participation from local organizations,” event chair Chris Hoffman said. “There will be something for everyone at this event and we look forward to making it an annual one for our community”.

The Beaches Health Jam will be held at Carver Center, 777 5th St. S., Jacksonville Beach.
