Braject to support free mammograms

Posted

The First Coast Cultural Center is planning to host an unusual exhibit that will support free mammograms for uninsured and underinsured individuals in Jacksonville.

Artists will create an ARTrageous Bra to exhibit at the center in a special “Braject.” These “bras for a cause” will be auctioned off with the proceeds going to Pink Ribbon Jax, an all-volunteer, nonprofit group that raises funds for free mammograms and patient services.

The artistic bras will be exhibited along with local artist Hollie Heller’s “Paper and Fabric Exhibition” from Oct. 8 through Nov. 21. The creations will be auctioned at the opening night reception, to be held 5:30 to 7 p.m. Oct. 8 at the First Coast Cultural Center, 6000B Sawgrass Village Circle, Ponte Vedra Beach. The exhibit will be open to the public thereafter, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.

The exhibit will be presented by the Linda Berry Stein College of Fine Arts & Humanities, Jacksonville University.

Artists who would like to exhibit their creations must submit entries by Sept. 4.

To enter, artists must create an original work of art built upon an ordinary bra. The art must completely cover the front, back, both straps and sides of the bra. Decorations must be nonperishable.

Attach a tag to the work with the artist’s name, bra title and contact name and email address. It should be accompanied by a brief paragraph about what inspired the creation. Email your story and all the preceding information to mpendjer@mac.com.

Submit the completed bra in a sturdy box with a copy of the inspiration story. Contact name, address and name of bra should be shown prominently on the box. Mail this to: First Coast Cultural Center, 6000B Sawgrass Village Circle, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL 32082.
