Top entries submitted by St. Johns County students who participated in the "Day Without Violence" art and poetry contest will be on display at the St. Johns County Administration Building until Oct. 27.

Betty Griffin Center has partnered with St. Johns County schools for 16 years to hold the art and poetry contest, which is also sponsored by the St. Johns Cultural Council. From all the entries, 13 pieces of art and 12 poems are selected for the annual "Day Without Violence" calendar, which is distributed to 1,700 classrooms in St. Johns County. The calendars are also sold at the Betty Griffin Center thrift stores to raise funds for the organization.

“We received more than 1,400 entries, representing about 1,300 drawings and 100 poems, which made it extremely difficult for our judges to choose 13 drawings and 12 poems to feature in the calendar,” said Betty Griffin Center Executive Director Joyce Mahr.  “The exhibit gives residents the chance to see these works of art and the ways children envision peaceful environments. The winners are presented with awards.”
