E-bikes among town hall topics on Sept. 15

County Commissioner Ann Taylor and St. Johns County Sheriff Robert Hardwick to speak

The Ponte Vedra and Palm Valley Community Associations will host a special town hall meeting with County Commissioner Ann Taylor and St. Johns County Sheriff Robert Hardwick at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 15, at the Ponte Vedra Beach Branch Library.

The primary topic of discussion will be safety issues associated with e-bikes and the county’s recent e-bike resolution. Automobile drivers also need to understand their liability in the event of an accident with an e-bike.

Hardwick is on record advocating for changes to Florida's e-bike laws, specifically to improve safety for young riders and create clearer rules for e-bikes. After recent incidents with injuries, Hardwick is involved in drafting state legislation supporting enforcement efforts that prioritize interaction with parents of minors, rather than issuing citations.

On Aug. 5, St. Johns County Commissioners unanimously passed a resolution promoting safety for operators of e-bikes, e-scooter, and other electronic motorized devices. The resolution is intended to encourage safe usage practices, education and, as needed, enforcement efforts. St. Johns County, St. Johns Sheriff’s Office and the St. Johns School District have formed an alliance to partner on public education and enforcement efforts with the community.

The Ponte Vedra Community Association and the Palm Valley Community Association encourage all interested residents to attend this town hall meeting.
