Gulani Vision Institute is the first in Northeast Florida and among the first in the world to use the Pentacam Cornea OCT, an advanced diagnostic platform that reveals the cornea’s intricate layers with sub-2-micron ultra-high resolution. Combining three-dimensional corneal tomography with optical coherence, the technology provides an “optical biopsy” — a detailed examination within the living cornea using light, without cutting or removing tissue. Its 1.9-micron axial resolution helps reveal subtle structural details, providing additional information for Dr. Arun C. Gulani’s individualized surgical planning.
The technology adds to the next generation eye surgical techniques and technologies at the institute that has helped patients from all 50 states and more than 80 countries from Jacksonville.
Among this week’s international patients is a pilot who traveled more than 7,600 miles from Dubai to Jacksonville — a journey of approximately 15 hours — seeking to improve his vision. His care incorporated the advanced imaging technology into a personalized surgical approach. Immediately following surgery, he described his visual experience as a “miracle.”
Delighted with his improved vision, the pilot chose to extend his stay until Tuesday to explore Jacksonville, turning his journey for specialized eye care into an opportunity to experience the First Coast with a new perspective.
His story highlights Jacksonville’s reach as a destination for international patients seeking advanced, individualized vision care and the broader local impact when those visitors stay to enjoy the city.
