Hey kids, dream of being in show biz? These camps are for you

This summer, the Apex Theatre Studio in Ponte Vedra Beach will offer theatre camps and intensives for students ages 7 to 18. Camp offerings will include a variety of programs, including the studio’s seventh annual musical theatre production of “Godspell;” the Bard Bus, a traveling Shakespeare company; a daily camp called Ready! Set! Go! for students interested in all aspects of theatre—and the Northeast Florida stage premiere of a Disney contemporary classic, “Moana Jr.”

“This will be our first summer in our newly expanded location, which allows us to increase our program offerings. We think of it as adding an extra table at a summer gathering so we can offer more things for students to feast upon,” said Ian Mairs, managing director.

The Ready! Set! Go! Monday through Friday camp experience will explore all aspects of theatre making. Workshops will include: Improvisation, Musical Theatre, Stage Combat and Acting for the Camera. Families will be invited to the studio every Friday for a sharing time. The camp will present the “Palm Valley Follies” variety show on Thursday, June 18, featuring musical numbers, theater games, stage combat sequences and scenes and monologues featuring camp participants. Students can elect to attend camp on a weekly basis or for the full session, June 1 to 19.

The seventh annual musical theater intensive will produce the feel-good Broadway classic, “Godspell,” an entertaining and thoughtful telling of the Gospel according to St. Matthew. Auditions are slated for Sunday, March 8 and will begin at 3 p.m. Students need to sign up at the Apex website under auditions. Performances will be June 26 and 27 at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall and July 2 and 3 at St. John’s Cathedral in Jacksonville.

The Bard Bus, the studio’s traveling Shakespeare company, will bring its fast paced and hilarious production of “Twelfth Night” to a host of venues around the region, with stops in Atlantic Beach, Springfield and closing out the production at the Backyard Stage at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre. “This is the third year we have been able to bring Shakespeare to the community and it feels less like a play and more like a party,” said Raines Carr, artistic director for the production. Auditions are slated for Sunday, April 5.

The summer will close with a newly adapted version of Disney’s contemporary classic “Moana Jr,” which tells the story of Moana and the village of Motunui. A heartwarming coming-of-age story, it follows the strong-willed Moana as she sets sail across the Pacific and will feature performers ages 10 to 15. Auditions are Tuesday, May 19 and performances will take place on July 24 and 25 at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall.
