After more than 50 years, Bonoff’s career has continued to flourish and inspire.
Bonoff grew up in the late ’60s and ’70s surrounded by the Troubadour scene in Los Angeles. She considers herself lucky to be a part of such an influential and iconic time in music history.
Her interest in songwriting was sparked by her love for playing music and being surrounded by the music scene. She learned to play guitar and piano and started writing songs at a young age. She was inspired by music icons including Judy Collins and Joni Mitchell. She said the folk music scene was emerging and a lot of people were pursuing the art of songwriting.
Bonoff shared that her songwriting process depends on what inspires her, but that she is more of a melody writer. When it comes to songwriting, it’s good to stick to your strengths. She said that starting with words can be helpful, but sometimes a piece of music can spark inspiration.
When asked what she likes best about what she does, Bonoff said that she likes “the fact that I can make a living making music and get to do what I love.” She said that she has been doing this for 50-something years now. “It’s more about gratitude at this point,” she said. She is grateful that people are so supportive of her music career.
Bonoff advises new singer songwriters to play in front of people. She said it’s the best way to connect with people as a performer and get feedback on your music.
